2nd Annual Flamenco Summer Tablaos and Artist Residency Now-July 12th
Casa Flamenca in Old Town
In this 2nd Annual Summer Event (in collaboration with the Urban Enhancement Trust Fund), this private home is transformed for six weeks into a small, traditional cave-like Flamenco performance in the heart of Old Town, Albuquerque.
We experience one of Flamenco’s oldest and most distinct cultural traditions: The Tablao Flamenco. A tablao (colloquial term for the Spanish “tablado”, floorboard) is a place where flamenco shows were performed and developed during the sixties of the 20th century throughout Spain replacing the “cafés cantantes” (cabarets). “There is nothing like experiencing Flamenco on this level, face to face with fierce performers (dancers, singer and guitarist) and the vibrations of the floor underneath you. This is how one’s first Flamenco experience was meant to be.”- says Jesus Muñoz, Dancer/Director at Casa Flamenca.
In addition to the sheer potency of Flamenco’s allure, raw intuition and artistic value, what wraps this experience up with beautiful packaging is the setting at Casa Flamenca. One is first drawn in by this small house, which at first sight is literally—a Native-American/ New Mexican/ Gypsy-inspired Masterpiece whose facade was blessed by the paint brush of world-renowned multi-media Xemez Pueblo Artist, Jaque Fragua. On the inside, it is decorated much like an iconic Andalucian Tablao with vintage Flamenco posters and memorabilia- finished off by framed black box lighting, and seating for just enough people to adorn the intimacy.
Casa Flamenca’s vision has always been about sharing a unique and personal experience through the art of Flamenco, from it’s world-class concerts to its training experience. Tablao Flamenco is identified by the feeling of inclusion as the audience literally shares the stage with the performer(s). One becomes part of something so real, so distinctly Spanish- that it’s easy to forget we’re on the Rio Grande.
