"Sacred Songs & Modern Dances" Friday, August 28, 7:30pm at the Unitarian Church in Charleston I am classical saxophonist Jonathan Kammer, and I welcome you to enjoy an evening of gorgeous and soulful music as played on the classical saxophone, performed by myself and some other great musician friends in town. It's the inaugural event of a small-scale, "do it yourself" chamber music concert series that I am trying to get off the ground. People in the Charleston region love great classical music, and I'm serving it up on sax with other great players! We will have a blast! In fact, we will have a Ball!! That's because I've commissioned a new work for piano, violin, and tenor saxophone trio, from the young American composer & South Carolina musicista Laura Ball, for world premiere at this concert! This first concert also features chamber music performances by some of our local titans of classical music: -Violinist Yuriy Bekker, CSO concertmaster -Cellist Terry Muir, avidly concertizing freelance player -Violinist Asako Kremer, CSO Assistant Principle -Flutist & piccoloist Regina Helcher Yost, of the CSO and Colorado Music Festival. -Pianist, Vocalist & Composer Laura Ball, of the Uned!ted Concert Series The Program: -World Premier trio for tenor saxophone, violin, and piano, by Laura Ball. -Kol Nidrei, by Max Bruch. The famed cello romance, in a fresh arrangement for tenor saxophone and chamber ensemble. -Divertimento for Alto Saxophone and String Orchestra, by Roger Boutry. This excitingly rhythmical and energetically vocalistic work is simply a jewel! Especially arranged for our evening's concert players. -Aria, by Eugene Bozza. Another beautiful piece of French saxophone music in special new arrangement for this concert, featuring alto saxophone. -Epitaphe de Jean Harlow, by Charles Koechlin. The popular and pretty trio for flute, alto saxophone, and piano. -Serpent, by John Anthony Lennon. This mysterious and elegant dance-like chamber work is by the award-winning contemporary American composer from Georgia, not the Beatles guy! Arranged by the composer for trio of flute, alto saxophone, and piano. -Devil's Rag, by Jean Matitia. A new take on an old-time, Vaudville-style musical form. A saxophone and piano duet, and I'll be performing on baritone sax for this one! -Parce Mihi Domine, from Cristóbal de Morales' 16-th century musical setting of the Officum Defunctorum. Composed for four-voice choir, we will perform it on organ with an improvised saxophone line floating above it. -Caprice No. 16, by Niccolò Paganini, on alto saxophone. -Für Alina, by Arvo Pärt. Written for solo piano in 1976 by the famed modern composer from Estonia, this simple and gorgeous musical reflection has been adapted for numerous different instruments. I am certain that my arrangement of this little jewel is unique and will be enjoyed. Come on out and enjoy a fantastic evening of music!!!
